Writing Full-Time? You’re No Longer Just A Writer

There are a number of people in the world that possess the right skill set to be a writer. Different people will give you different answers as to what that skill set is, but most often it includes at the bare minimum creativity and the ability to communicate well.

When transitioning into writing full-time though, you need to look at yourself as more than just a writer. While producing written content is what you are being paid for, it is not all that you need to do.

  • You are part marketer, because without you marketing your writing services, you will have no clients.
  • You are part salesman, because there will come a day when you have to explain to a potential customer why your service is either worth a certain amount or is the service that they should go with.
  • You are part receptionist, because it is you that will be meeting, greeting, and even screening the people contacting you.
  • You are part accountant, because if you don’t stay on top of the financial side of your writing business, your business will most likely fail.
  • You are part manager, because there will come a time when you need to make the non-glamorous decisions that don’t involve doing what is fun and interesting.
  • You are even part custodian, because at the end of your day it will most likely be you who clears off your desk and empties your garbage.

Earning a full-time living online through writing is definitely possible. The most successful online writers know though that they are not just writers, they are business owners. And sometimes that means paying attention to and doing things that are not glamorous or fun, but it all fits into the bigger picture of being a full-time writer.
